Oviedo is a compact, walkable city with a pedestrian casco antiguo, so most of a dog-inclusive visit happens on foot. For longer trips, the urban bus network (TUA) accepts small dogs in carriers, RENFE and the FEVE narrow-gauge line connect Oviedo to Gijรณn and the Asturias coast (small dogs travel in a carrier; larger dogs need a muzzle and short lead), ALSA buses serve the region and the rest of Spain, and Asturias Airport (OVD) is around 40 minutes northwest by car or shuttle. There is no tram in Oviedo.
| Mode | Policy | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| TUA (City Bus) | Small dogs in a closed carrier are permitted on Oviedo`s urban buses. Assistance dogs travel free. Large uncontained dogs are generally not allowed; drivers can refuse at busy times. | ๐ก |
| FEVE (Narrow-Gauge Rail) | Small dogs up to about 10 kg in a closed carrier travel free on the FEVE narrow-gauge network. Larger dogs must wear a muzzle and remain on a short lead and may require a ticket. The scenic OviedoโGijรณn and coastal Asturias lines are an easy car-free way to reach the dog beaches of the coast. | ๐ก |
| RENFE (National & Regional Rail) | Small dogs under 10 kg in a closed carrier (max 60ร35ร35 cm) travel on RENFE regional and long-distance trains, with a fee on long-distance services. Larger dogs require advance authorisation and must be muzzled and leashed. Guide dogs travel free. Oviedo connects to Madrid by long-distance train and to Leรณn and the Castilian plateau. | ๐ก |
| ALSA (Regional & Intercity Bus) | ALSA, headquartered in Asturias, operates regional and long-distance coaches from the Oviedo bus station. Small dogs in a carrier may travel in the cabin on most regional routes; larger dogs usually travel in the hold in an approved transport box. Confirm the policy for your specific route and reserve the pet space in advance. | ๐ก |
| Taxi & Ride-hailing | Local taxis are plentiful in Oviedo and most drivers accept small dogs; for larger dogs confirm before boarding. There is a useful taxi rank near the train stations and the Campo de San Francisco. Booking a pet-friendly taxi by phone is the most reliable option for trips to Asturias Airport (OVD). | ๐ก |
Oviedo`s casco antiguo is small, flat and almost entirely pedestrian, linking the Catedral de San Salvador, Plaza del Fontรกn, the Mercado del Fontรกn and Calle Gascona within a few hundred metres, all easy to cover on lead. From the centre it is a 15-minute walk to the Campo de San Francisco and a longer uphill route or short taxi to the pre-Romanesque churches of Monte Naranco. The compact scale makes Oviedo one of the most relaxed Spanish cities to explore with a dog.
