Dog-Friendly Attractions in Oviedo

Oviedo`s Gothic cathedral, begun in the 14th century around the 9th-century Cámara Santa (a UNESCO World Heritage chapel holding the relics of the Holy Shrine of Oviedo). It rises over the broad Plaza de Alfonso II el Casto in the heart of the casco antiguo. Dogs on lead are welcome on the surrounding pedestrian plaza and the old-town streets that radiate from it; the cathedral interior, Cámara Santa and cloister admit assistance dogs only.

Two 9th-century pre-Romanesque churches on the slopes of Monte Naranco, jewels of Asturian Ramirense architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Santa María del Naranco (a former royal hall) and the nearby San Miguel de Lillo stand among meadows with one of the finest panoramas back over Oviedo and the Cathedral. Dogs on lead are welcome on the surrounding trails and lawns and around the church exteriors; the interiors admit assistance dogs only.

The arcaded heart of Oviedo`s old town, a porticoed square that hosts a daily food market and a Sunday flea market, beside the covered Mercado del Fontán hall. The whole quarter is pedestrian and dog-friendly on lead, lined with sidrerías and cafés with terraces. It is the most atmospheric place in the city for a slow morning stroll with a dog before picking up picnic supplies for the Campo de San Francisco.
