Oviedo is one of the easiest Spanish cities for a dog-inclusive trip: a compact pedestrian centre, a famously dog-friendly cider culture on Calle Gascona, a green city park and the pre-Romanesque hill of Monte Naranco all within walking or a short taxi ride. The two things to plan around are the green-Spain weather (mild but genuinely rainy year-round) and the fact that Oviedo is inland, so beach days mean a short trip to the Asturias coast where dog access is seasonal.
Oviedo has a mild oceanic climate, the heart of `green Spain`, which means lush hills and frequent rain even in summer. Temperatures rarely get extreme (highs around 22–24 °C in summer, lows around 8–10 °C in winter), so paw-burn is not a concern, but a light persistent drizzle is a near-daily reality. Carry a small dog towel and a packable raincoat, and plan indoor-adjacent options like covered Calle Gascona terraces and the Mercado del Fontán for the wettest spells.
Oviedo is around 30 km inland, so a beach day is a short drive or FEVE train to the Costa Verde. Across Asturias dogs are generally banned from the urban beaches during the summer bathing season (typically 1 June to 30 September) and only a few beaches keep a year-round dog zone. The closest reliable option is the marked dog half of Playón de Bayas in Castrillón; El Rinconín-Cervigón in Gijón was Asturias`s first official dog beach but its access is under review in the 2026 ordinance. Always check current rules before travelling.
Spain maintains a national register of breeds classified as `Potentially Dangerous` (PPP). These breeds must always be leashed and muzzled in public spaces in Oviedo, including inside fenced off-leash dog zones. Owners must carry their PPP licence and insurance. Check with the Spanish authorities before travelling if your breed may be classified.
