Newquay, the main resort on the north coast of Cornwall, was a small pilchard-fishing port before the railway arrived in 1876 and turned it into a holiday town. Today it is Britain's surf capital, famous for Fistral Beach and the dozen or so sandy beaches wrapped around it. For a dog, it is one of Cornwall's easiest destinations: most beaches, including Fistral, Crantock and Watergate Bay, allow dogs year-round, the South West Coast Path is always open, the harbour pubs welcome dogs, and the town even has its own out-of-hours vet. The only things to plan around are a handful of seasonal beach rules (Porth banned in peak summer, Tolcarne on a lead) set by Cornwall Council, and, for EU visitors, the GB Animal Health Certificate required since Brexit instead of the EU pet passport.
Britain's most famous surf beach, a wide sweep of golden Atlantic sand on the Pentire side. Dogs allowed year-round; watch the powerful surf and rip currents.
A glorious National Trust beach of pale sand, dunes and the turquoise Gannel estuary just west of town. Dog-friendly year-round; mind the fast Gannel tide.
Two miles of open Atlantic sand north-east of town, entirely dog-friendly year-round. The vast low-tide expanse gives dogs room to run for miles.
The historic working harbour below the town, ringed by dog-friendly pubs. Its small beach is dog-friendly year-round and it is the departure point for the boat trips.
Dramatic clifftop walking around Towan and Pentire heads with huge Atlantic views. Open to dogs year-round; lead up near the cliff edges and livestock.
A beautiful tidal estuary separating Newquay from Crantock, with sandy banks and footpaths. Open to dogs year-round; watch the fast incoming tide.
