Mojácar, a village of about 6,000 in Almería province on the sun-baked coast of eastern Andalusia, splits into two worlds: Mojácar Pueblo, a cascade of whitewashed Moorish-era houses clinging to a hilltop 2 km inland, and Mojácar Playa, a long ribbon of beachfront below. Held by the Moors until 1488, the old town keeps its labyrinth of stepped lanes, flower-filled miradors and a restored gateway, all easy to explore with a leashed dog. For pet owners the appeal is a relaxed, walkable pueblo and a huge stretch of sand, tempered by two realities: Almería is the driest corner of Europe with fierce summer heat, and the resort beaches ban dogs in the bathing season. Mojácar answered growing demand by opening its first official dog beach at the Playa del Perulejo, near the Torre de Macenas, in 2025.
The whitewashed hilltop old town, a maze of steep stepped lanes, arches and flower-filled corners rising from the coastal plain. Leashed dogs are welcome to wander its streets, plazas and café terraces.
The restored Moorish-era gateway that was once the only entrance to the walled hilltop town, still framing the climb into the old quarter. Dogs on a lead pass freely beneath its horseshoe arch.
A historic marble fountain with twelve spouts at the foot of the old town, long the village's water source and a shaded, symbolic meeting place. The surrounding gardens and benches make an easy stop with a leashed dog.
The clifftop viewpoint at the summit of the pueblo, where the old fortress once stood, with sweeping views over the Mediterranean and the Sierra Cabrera. The open terrace is a fine leashed-dog stop, best at sunset as the heat of the day eases.
Mojácar's first official dog beach, opened in 2025 on the Playa del Perulejo near the Torre de Macenas, fitted with dog showers, waste bins and shaded areas. It is the reliable place to let a dog swim when the town's main beaches close to dogs in summer.
The rugged coastal range rising behind Mojácar, laced with dirt tracks and old mining trails that look down over the village and the sea. Leashed hikes here are best in the cooler months, with plenty of water since shade and streams are scarce.
