Mojácar is moving firmly in a pet-friendly direction, with a new dog beach and a relaxed terrace culture, but it is a hot Costa de Almería resort where summer heat is the main thing to plan around. A few local rules and habits make a long beach stay with a dog much easier.

Dogs must be leashed on streets, the promenade and the bathing beaches, and owners must collect waste, with fines for non-compliance. During the summer bathing season dogs are banned from the main bathing beaches; the designated Perulejo dog beach near Macenas is the legal place for them on the sand. Dogs must be microchipped and vaccinated, and certain breeds classed as potentially dangerous (PPP) require a muzzle and licence in public.
Beat the Summer Heat
Almería is one of the hottest, driest corners of Spain, and in July and August midday sand and asphalt can burn paws while heatstroke is a genuine danger. Walk at dawn and after sunset, test surfaces with the back of your hand, carry water everywhere, and never leave a dog in a parked car. Seek shade in the pueblo or under the promenade trees in the hottest hours.

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable for a dog, with warm sea and gentler temperatures. The new Perulejo dog beach is open year-round, and in winter (roughly November to March) dogs traditionally enjoy more freedom on the regular beaches.
