Marché Central
Centre-Ville · Place du Marché, 17000 La Rochelle
The covered central market of La Rochelle is the most local food experience in town, a grand stone-and-iron hall from 1836 surrounded by terraced cafés and bars. Inside, oyster sellers shuck Marennes-Oléron to order, fishmongers lay out the morning's Atlantic catch, and cheese and charcuterie stalls fill the air. Dogs wander the surrounding terraces and the market approaches without any fuss, and many of the café terraces ringing the square keep water bowls out. Come early on a market morning, order a dozen oysters and a glass of pineau des Charentes at one of the terraces, and let your dog soak up the salt-and-iodine bustle of a working Atlantic port.
💡 Saturday and Sunday mornings are the liveliest. Arrive before 9am for the freshest catch and the calmest terraces for your dog
