La Rochelle's beaches follow the standard French Atlantic pattern: dogs are restricted in high summer and welcome the rest of the year. The town's two urban beaches, the Plage des Minimes by the marina and the smaller Plage de la Concurrence near the centre, are governed by the municipal arrรชtรฉ, which keeps dogs off the supervised beach zones in peak season (roughly mid-June to mid-September) and permits them, on a lead, outside those dates. From October to May this makes both beaches genuinely excellent for a dog, wide Atlantic sand, sea air and few crowds. The real prize, though, is the รle de Rรฉ, ten minutes across the bridge, where several beaches allow dogs year-round (often leashed in summer) and the island's scale gives endless foreshore to explore. Check the current municipal arrรชtรฉ and the panneaux at each beach entrance, as the exact dates shift slightly year to year.
