April–June and September–October are ideal: 18–24°C, low rainfall, lush green Choupal. Avoid mid-July to mid-August (28–30°C with strong sun) and December–February (cool, rainy, 80% humidity).
Coimbra is hilly — really hilly — but compact: the whole old town fits in a 600-metre square, climbing 70 m from river to university. Friendly to dogs of all sizes, with strong terrace culture and an excellent forest park 10 min west.

Coimbra's old town climbs 70 m on cobbled streets and stairways (Quebra-Costas means 'back-breaker'). Small dogs cope well; older or short-legged dogs may need carrying on the steepest sections. The Linha Verde mini-bus is the easy alternative.

Portugal uses the euro. Coimbra is one of Portugal's cheapest cities: meal 12–22 EUR, espresso 0.80–1.20 EUR, mid-range hotel 75–130 EUR/night, taxi station-to-old-town 5–8 EUR.
