Alicante's combination of mild winters and brutal summer heat means timing matters more than in most European cities. The following rules will save you a vet bill, a municipal fine, or both.

- 1.Brutal summer ground heat: from June to mid-September the marble Explanada and asphalt pavements regularly exceed 50°C in the afternoon. Test the ground with the back of your hand for 5 seconds - if you cannot hold it, your dog cannot walk on it. Walk before 09:00 and after 20:00 only.
- 2.Beach ban 1 May–1 October: Postiguet and San Juan are off-limits to dogs with municipal fines up to €300. The only year-round dog beach is Playa de Agua Amarga 4 km south, reachable on TAM bus line 21.
- 3.TRAM Metropolitano d'Alacant is the most pet-friendly transport - small dogs in carriers free, larger leashed and muzzled dogs accepted off-peak. Line 1 is the easiest way to reach Benidorm with your dog (1h05).
- 4.Heatstroke signs: heavy panting that does not slow after 10 minutes of rest in shade, bright red gums, stumbling. Move to AC immediately, wet paws and belly with cool (not ice) water, call Hospital Veterinario Alicante (+34 965 109 044). Summer heatstroke can be fatal within 30 minutes.
- 5.EU pet passport (or UK Animal Health Certificate post-Brexit) is required at all times in Spain - municipal police can request it on the spot. Save a phone photo of the document as backup.

Are dogs allowed inside the Castillo de Santa Bárbara?
Leashed dogs are welcome on all outdoor paths and ramparts of the castle, including the elevator approach from Playa del Postiguet. Dogs are not allowed inside the indoor museum rooms (Sala Noble, Cuerpo de Guardia exhibition spaces). The outdoor castle visit alone is worth the trip and takes 60–90 minutes.
Can I take my dog on the TRAM to Benidorm?
Yes. Small dogs in a closed carrier (max 60 × 35 × 35 cm) travel free at any time on TRAM line 1 to Benidorm. Larger leashed and muzzled dogs are accepted at the driver's discretion outside peak hours (avoid 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–19:30 on weekdays). The 1h05 ride along the coast is one of the most scenic in Spain.
Which is the best dog beach near Alicante in July?
Playa de Agua Amarga, 4 km south of the centre, is officially designated as a year-round dog beach by Alicante City Council - the only one within city limits. Off-leash is permitted on the sand. Arrive before 10:00 in July and August because the sand exceeds 50°C by midday. Reachable in 25 min on TAM city bus line 21.
