Castillo de Santa Bárbara
Monte Benacantil, Alicante
Looming 166 m above the city on Mount Benacantil, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara is one of Spain's largest medieval fortresses. Built by the Moors in the 9th century and substantially extended by the Habsburg crown in the 16th and 17th centuries, it dominates every view of central Alicante. Leashed dogs are welcome on all outdoor paths, the three concentric enclosures and the panoramic ramparts. Access is free; the easiest route up is the lift from Playa del Postiguet (€2.70 one-way), or on foot via the southern Marqués de Campo Anguloso path.
💡 Take the elevator up (10:00–22:00 in summer) and walk down via the south path — saves your dog's paws on a steep descent and gives you the most dramatic gulf views from the top
