Dog-Friendly Attractions in Alicante

Looming 166 m above the city on Mount Benacantil, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara is one of Spain's largest medieval fortresses. Built by the Moors in the 9th century and substantially extended by the Habsburg crown in the 16th and 17th centuries, it dominates every view of central Alicante. Leashed dogs are welcome on all outdoor paths, the three concentric enclosures and the panoramic ramparts. Access is free; the easiest route up is the lift from Playa del Postiguet (€2.70 one-way), or on foot via the southern Marqués de Campo Anguloso path.

Alicante's most iconic urban space, the Explanada de España is a 500 m seafront promenade paved with 6,600 red, white and black marble tiles arranged in a wave pattern that has become the city's visual signature. Lined by four rows of date palms and bordered by café terraces on one side and the marina on the other, it is entirely dog-friendly year-round. The marble surface is fiercely hot in summer afternoons — walk it in the early morning or evening for the most pleasant experience.

The historic Barrio de Santa Cruz climbs the southern flank of Mount Benacantil immediately below the castle, a maze of whitewashed alleys, steep stairways decked with flowerpots and façades draped in bougainvillea. The neighbourhood is best explored on foot from the Plaza del Carmen upwards, and is highly dog-friendly on the outdoor terraces of its small tapas bars. The stairs are steep — avoid the hottest hours with a small or short-legged dog.
