Founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, Verona flourished under emperors Augustus and Claudius. The Arena di Verona, built around 30 AD, could hold 30,000 spectators, it remains one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world and still hosts opera every summer. In the Middle Ages the city reached its zenith under the Scaligeri dynasty, who commissioned the frescoes, palaces, and Gothic tombs that still ornament the historic centre. Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet in Verona for good reason: the city of rose-pink stone and medieval lanes is among Europe's most romantic. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, Verona today welcomes millions of visitors, and their dogs are welcome on wine-bar terraces, in the Giardino Giusti, and along the banks of the Adige.
The great 1st-century Roman amphitheatre, still used for opera performances in summer. Dogs are not permitted inside but can freely explore the exterior and the vast Piazza Bra on leash. Walking around the outside is one of Verona's unmissable experiences.
A 16th-century Renaissance garden recognised as one of the finest in Europe, with cypress avenues, fountains, and panoramic views over Verona. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout. The shaded paths make it one of the best shelters from summer heat.
Verona's oldest Roman bridge (1st century BC), partly rebuilt after World War II. It offers one of the most iconic views of the Adige and the Veronetta hillside. Leashed dogs can cross freely and enjoy the panorama.
A hilltop viewpoint above the Roman Theatre offering the best panoramic view of Verona and the Adige. Leashed dogs are welcome on the paths and terrace. Accessible on foot via a staircase from Veronetta (15-minute climb).
Verona's oldest and most beautiful square, built on the Roman forum and surrounded by painted palaces and medieval towers. The morning market fills it with flower and produce stalls Monday to Saturday. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the square.
A 14th-century medieval castle converted into a museum by Carlo Scarpa. Leashed dogs are welcome in the courtyard, gardens, and on the famous Ponte Scaligero. Only small dogs in carriers are admitted inside the museum. The fortified bridge offers stunning views over the Adige.
