Pisa is one of Italy's oldest maritime republics: an Etruscan settlement from the 7th century BC, in the 11th-12th centuries it built the Romanesque ensemble of Piazza dei Miracoli, Cathedral, Baptistery, Leaning Tower and Camposanto, earning UNESCO listing in 1987. With about 90 000 inhabitants, it is a small but heavily academic city (the University of Pisa is one of Europe's oldest), threaded by the Arno and backed by the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli regional park, 23 000 hectares of pine forest, dunes and wetlands stretching to the sea. Tuscan culture is openly dog-friendly: the vast majority of cafés, trattorias and terraces accept dogs, and the Tyrrhenian coast 10 km away has marked dog beaches open year-round at Marina di Pisa. The only real catch is the pet ban inside the four Piazza dei Miracoli monuments.
The UNESCO Field of Miracles: Cathedral, Baptistery, Leaning Tower and Camposanto, aligned on a wide lawn. The exterior lawn is free and leash-friendly, but the interior of the four monuments admits only assistance dogs.
The paired Arno embankments running through the heart of Pisa, lined with pastel townhouses and dog-friendly café terraces. The Ponte di Mezzo gives the classic Pisa skyline shot, leash-friendly at any hour.
A former royal estate, now a Tuscan regional park of 23 000 hectares of pine forests and dunes 8 km from the centre. Leash-friendly paths and signposted off-leash sections; bus 010 from Pisa Centrale or rental bikes at Cascine Vecchie.
Tyrrhenian beach 10 km west, with year-round 'spiaggia per cani' marked sections. The southern stretch toward Calambrone offers the best free public access and paid dog-lidos.
Renaissance square between the Lungarni and the Field of Miracles, fronted by the sgraffito façade of Palazzo della Carovana and the Scuola Normale Superiore. Public space, leashed dogs welcome at any hour.
The city's main garden, set inside the bastions of the 16th-century Cittadella Nuova on Lungarno Fibonacci. Mature plane trees, fountains, an open-air theatre; leashed dogs welcome.
