Granada

The Nasrid palace and fortress of the Alhambra dominates Granada from its wooded sandstone spur. Built mainly between 1238 and 1358, the complex is one of the world's most visited monuments. Dogs are not permitted inside (except accredited guide dogs), but the forested floresta de a Alhambra paths encircling the site are accessible on lead and offer beautiful shaded walks with partial views of the towers. Book tickets months in advance.

This public promenade runs along the Darro river below the Alhambra walls and offers one of the most spectacular views in Spain. Dogs on leads are welcome at all hours. The terrace bars along the paseo accept dogs, and the view of the floodlit Alhambra on a summer evening is unforgettable. It is the closest point to the Alhambra that dog owners can reach without entering the grounds.

Granada's ancient Moorish quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, unfolds as a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, whitewashed carmen walls, and panoramic miradors. Entirely public and freely walkable on lead, it culminates at the Mirador de San Nicolás with its iconic Alhambra view. Local bars and restaurants follow Andalusia's terrace welcome rules for dogs. Avoid summer afternoons when the narrow lanes trap heat.

Granada's largest urban park, 70,000 m² of shaded lawns, walking paths, and a duck pond, stretches between Avenida de Neptuno and Avenida de Arabial. Dogs must be kept on lead, but the size and tree canopy make it one of the coolest retreats in the city during heatwaves. Named after the poet Federico García Lorca, who was born in the Granada province.

One of Granada's best pipicanes (fenced dog enclosures), fully enclosed with agility obstacles, a drinking fountain, and night lighting. Popular with residents of the Arabial and Zaidín neighbourhoods. Dogs of all sizes can run off-lead. Ideal in early morning or after 20:00 in summer.

The officially designated dog beach on the Granada coast, in Motril, approximately 65 km south via the A-44. Known as PlayaCan, it offers 400 metres of shingle and sand where dogs can run off-lead year-round, including summer when most Spanish beaches are off-limits. The water is clear and warm from June to October.
