Calpe

Calpe's emblematic rock, protected as a natural park, its silhouette towering over the whole bay. Leashed dogs are allowed on the lower trail that climbs to the foot of the cliff, but the tunnel and the exposed summit section beyond are not suitable for them.

The former salt pans in the heart of town, now a lagoon where flamingos gather each year. The path that loops around it can be walked on leash, but keep your dog well back from the water so as not to disturb the birds.

Roman remains cut into the rock at the water's edge, former fish tanks and baths belonging to an ancient villa. The open-air archaeological site can be visited on leash while following the shoreline.

The old town of whitewashed lanes, painted walls and shady little squares, backing onto the fishing port. It makes for a pleasant leashed stroll away from traffic, before heading down to the evening fish market.

The large sandy beach at the foot of the town centre, busy and lined with a promenade. Like most urban beaches in the Valencian Community, it bans dogs in high season, so fall back on the quiet coves near the port instead.

The long Levante beach facing the Peñón, crowded in summer and popular for swimming. Dog access is restricted in high season, but the promenade running alongside stays open on leash early morning and evening.
