Onderweg met je hond in Bilbao

Bilbao's tram line is the best public transport option for dog owners, dogs of any size are allowed on a leash, no carrier required. The route connects the Casco Viejo (Atxuri station) to Abandoibarra and the Guggenheim area, passing through Indautxu and covering all major pet-travel stops in one line.

The Artxanda Funicular climbs from the Casco Viejo to the summit of Mount Artxanda and has a dedicated dog-friendly compartment, confirmed by Bilbao Tourism. The 3-minute ride deposits you at the mountaintop parkland with panoramic city views and plenty of off-leash space.

Metro Bilbao allows small dogs (under 8 kg) to travel held on the passenger's lap or in a carrier, dogs must not touch the floor or use a seat. Dogs over 8 kg are not permitted. The metro is useful for reaching Getxo (Line 1) for the coastal beaches, but for larger dogs use the tram or funicular instead.
