The mythical shell-shaped bay bans dogs from June 1 to September 15, 08:00-20:00. Off-season and early mornings it becomes one of Europe's finest dog-walking beaches, with its Belle Époque railings as backdrop.

The 123 m headland between the old town and the sea is crisscrossed with shaded forest trails leading to the Motako Gaztelua fortress and the Sagrado coração statue. Dogs on leash are welcome on all exterior paths.

The pintxo-bar grid around Plaza de la Constitución welcomes well-behaved dogs on most terraces and many bar floors, Basque pet culture is unusually relaxed. Evenings get crushingly busy; lunchtime txikiteo is calmer.

The wave-battered coastal promenade circles Monte Urgull, offering Atlantic spray and dramatic storm-viewing. Leashed dogs are welcome; keep them close during autumn and winter swells when the waves crash over the railings.

The 1912 funicular accepts leashed dogs (small fee) to the panoramic summit and its vintage amusement park. Alternatively, hike up via the GR-121 path for the best bay view in the Basque Country.

The surf beach of the Gros neighborhood also bans dogs during summer daytime, but the adjacent Parque de Cristina Enea offers a superb leafy alternative year-round with designated dog zones.
