Bellagio

The northern tip of Bellagio "that divides the wind", where the view takes in the lake's three branches and the Alps. A short panoramic walk on a leash, with a small esplanade and a cafe, one of the finest viewpoints open to dogs.

The romantic lakeside gardens of Villa Melzi, with neoclassical statues, azaleas and a rare weeping maple by the water. Villa gardens usually restrict dog access; check the current policy or admire them from the quay.

A vast terraced park crowning the Bellagio promontory, visited by guided tour with sweeping views over both branches of the lake. Access is by escorted tour and dogs are generally not admitted; plan an alternative.

The iconic stepped lane of old Bellagio, cobbled steps lined with shops, flowers and arcades climbing up from the shore. A picturesque on-leash stroll, but steep: avoid the hot hours and the peaks of summer crowds.

A peaceful fishing hamlet on the eastern side of the point, a few minutes from the centre, with its small cove, boats and view over the Lecco branch. A quiet on-leash stroll, away from the crowds of the main quays.

Public ferries and boats linking Bellagio to Varenna, Menaggio and Como, across the lake's famous central triangle. Leashed dogs allowed on board under the company's rules, often muzzled; ideal for exploring the lake without a car.
