Bakewell: geschiedenis en karakter

Bakewell, the only true market town inside the Peak District National Park, grew up around its ford on the River Wye, its five-arched medieval bridge and the weekly market it was granted by charter in the 13th century. Famous across the country for the Bakewell pudding and the Bakewell tart, it is today the walking base of the White Peak, that country of limestone dales and old railway trails. A deep British dog-walking culture sits on top: dogs are welcome in most of the pubs, on the flat Monsal Trail with its famous viaduct, and on a lead across the garden and vast parkland of Chatsworth, one of England's greatest stately-home estates. This is a working landscape, with sheep and cattle everywhere and ground-nesting birds in spring. One practical note: since Brexit, a GB Animal Health Certificate is required for dogs arriving from the EU.
