As its Latin name suggests, Interlaken was born "between the lakes", on the alluvial plain separating Lake Thun from Lake Brienz. An Augustinian monastery settled here in the 12th century, but it was romantic tourism that made the town's fortune: from the 19th century, writers and aristocrats came to gaze at the Jungfrau from the Höheweg promenade, and grand Belle Époque hotels rose facing the meadows. The arrival of the mountain railways, including the Jungfrau line completed in 1912, turned Interlaken into the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. The town remains that crossroads of water and summits, where paddle steamers, funiculars and panoramic trains leave in every direction, a logistical delight when travelling with a dog, accepted almost everywhere with a ticket.
The famous promenade links Interlaken's two stations along the Höhematte meadow, with the Jungfrau as a backdrop. Flat, shaded and lined with historic hotels, it is the quintessential on-lead stroll, morning and evening.
The funicular climbs in ten minutes to Interlaken's "home mountain" at 1,322 metres, for a panorama over both lakes and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau trilogy. Dogs travel with a ticket and enjoy the viewing platform on lead.
Lake Brienz, a uniquely milky turquoise, is best seen from the BLS fleet, including the historic paddle steamer Lötschberg. Dogs are allowed on board, generally at half fare, and the open decks suit them perfectly.
This nostalgic little funicular from 1906 climbs to a wooded viewpoint above Interlaken, with an observation tower and forest trails. Less busy than Harder Kulm, it is the quiet option for a shaded outing with a dog.
These legendary caves open in the cliff above Lake Thun, behind spectacular waterfalls. Dogs are not admitted into the galleries, but the access path and outdoor terraces already offer superb lake views.
Between Interlaken and Wilderswil, the ruins of Unspunnen castle watch over meadows that have hosted the alpine festivals of the same name since 1805. An easy pastoral walking goal, on lead, with the Jungfrau filling the frame.
