A note on heat and altitude
Altitude and heat both change the rules for a working dog. Above roughly 2,000 metres, pad protection and rest breaks matter more, a dog isn't acclimatised to altitude any faster than a person is. On hot valley-floor days, walk the big miles at dawn or dusk and save the cable-car summits for the heat of the afternoon, tarmac and rock get dangerously hot for paws well before the air does.

Can I take my dog on cable cars and mountain lifts in these destinations?
It depends on the lift. Interlaken's Harder Kulm funicular and Innsbruck's Nordkette cable car both carry leashed or muzzled dogs. Chamonix's Aiguille du Midi cable car does not accept dogs (other than assistance dogs), and the Lac Blanc trail beyond it crosses a nature reserve where dogs are banned entirely, so check each lift's own policy before you plan a route around it.
Is high-altitude hiking safe for a dog?
