August turns southern Europe into a furnace, with temperatures often climbing to 30-40ยฐC across Spain, Italy, and Greece. Dogs cannot cope with that heat, and most Mediterranean beaches ban dogs outright from 1 May to 30 September anyway.
The far north is the only genuinely comfortable choice this month. Reykjavik, Oslo, Bergen, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Aarhus sit in the 13-20ยฐC range, with long daylight hours, cool lakes and fjords to swim in, and beaches that actually welcome dogs.
โ ๏ธGood to know: Never bring a dog to southern Europe in August: heatstroke can set in within minutes on hot pavement or in a closed car, and most Mediterranean beaches are legally off-limits to dogs until October anyway.
