Zakynthos is a relaxed, outdoors-first Ionian island that suits an active dog well, as long as you plan around two things: the summer heat and the strict turtle-protection rules in Laganas Bay. Get those right and the island rewards you with hillside walks, open-air tavernas, and quiet coves. Here are the local rules and habits to know before you go.
Summer highs regularly reach the low 30s Celsius in July and August, and stone, sand, and asphalt can burn paws. Walk at dawn and after sunset, carry water on every outing, seek shade, and never leave a dog in a parked car, where temperatures turn lethal within minutes.
The single most important rule on Zakynthos: dogs are banned from the loggerhead turtle nesting beaches in the National Marine Park in Laganas Bay (Gerakas, Dafni, Kalamaki, Laganas, Sekania, Marathonisi). Several are closed at night in the May to October nesting season. Respect every sign and roped-off area.
A rental car is the most practical way to travel with a dog, as the KTEL bus network is limited and seasonal and requires small dogs in a carrier or larger dogs muzzled and leashed. On the Kyllini ferry, dogs go in a carrier on the open decks or must wear a muzzle and leash. Never leave a dog in the car at sights or beaches.
Late spring (May) and early autumn (late September to October) are the sweet spot for travelling with a dog: warm sea, comfortable walking temperatures, and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and busy, so reserve outdoor activities for early morning and evening. Winter is mild and quiet but many seasonal tavernas and beach facilities close.
