Dog-Friendly Attractions & Activities in Villefranche-sur-Mer

The Vieille Ville packs Genoa-style ochre and rose tenements into a tight grid of stepped lanes between the Port de la Santé and the Citadelle. Its signature is the Rue Obscure, a 130 m covered medieval passage dating from the 13th century that runs entirely under the houses, used historically as a refuge during sieges and bombardments. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the Vieille Ville lanes and the full length of the Rue Obscure. The whole circuit takes 30–45 minutes at an easy pace.

The small 14th-century fishermen's chapel on the Port de la Santé quay was decorated entirely inside by Jean Cocteau in 1957 with frescoes evoking the life of Saint Peter, the Apocalypse and scenes of Villefranche fishermen. The exterior, with its ochre walls and sober Romanesque silhouette, is one of the most photographed corners of the harbour. Leashed dogs are welcome on the quay around the chapel and on Place Amélie Pollonnais just behind; the small interior does not admit dogs, but ticket holders can take turns with a partner.

Baronne Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild's 1912 pink Italianate villa on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat is surrounded by nine themed gardens (French, Spanish, Florentine, stone, Japanese, exotic, Provençal, rose and Sevres garden) on a panoramic promontory between the bays of Villefranche and Beaulieu. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the gardens and on the terraces, free of leash-length restrictions. The villa interior with its painted rooms and Sèvres porcelain rooms does not admit dogs, but the gardens alone justify the visit and a single ticket includes them.
