Vieille Ville & Rue Obscure
Vieille Ville · Rue Obscure, 06230 Villefranche-sur-Mer
The Vieille Ville packs Genoa-style ochre and rose tenements into a tight grid of stepped lanes between the Port de la Santé and the Citadelle. Its signature is the Rue Obscure, a 130 m covered medieval passage dating from the 13th century that runs entirely under the houses, used historically as a refuge during sieges and bombardments. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the Vieille Ville lanes and the full length of the Rue Obscure. The whole circuit takes 30–45 minutes at an easy pace.
💡 Walk it before 10:00 or after 18:00 in summer: the lanes are narrow and fill quickly with cruise visitors during the day. The Rue Obscure is cool even in August.
