Monte-Carlo

The medieval old town perched on a rock above the sea, home to the Prince's Palace and a maze of pedestrian lanes with sweeping views over the port. Leashed dogs are welcome to wander the car-free streets and the Palace square, though not inside the Palace or the Oceanographic Museum.

Monaco's deep-water harbour, ringed by superyachts and forming part of the Grand Prix circuit. The quayside promenade is a flat, open leashed walk with cafés and terraces, one of the most people-watching-friendly strolls in the Principality.

The lavish Belle Époque casino and its landscaped square, with the manicured Boulingrins gardens sloping down towards the sea. Leashed dogs can take in the terraces and paths around the square, though not the lawns or the casino interior.

The recently rebuilt seafront district with a wide pedestrian promenade running above Monaco's main beach. It is a breezy leashed walk with sea views and shaded benches; the sand itself is off-limits to dogs, so keep to the promenade.

A dramatic cliffside garden of giant succulents and cacti with panoramic views over the Principality. Dogs are not permitted inside the garden itself, but there is a small fenced off-leash area with shade trees just outside at 33 boulevard du Jardin Exotique.

A scenic seaside customs path just west of Monaco, winding roughly 7 km along the cliffs of Cap d'Ail down to Mala Beach. Across the border in France, it is the closest thing to a proper nature walk, with rock pools, pines and open sea air for a well-exercised dog.

The reclaimed seaside district around Fontvieille harbour, with the shaded Princess Antoinette Park and a fenced dog area near Place du Campanin. The adjacent Princess Grace Rose Garden is off-limits to dogs, but the surrounding paths and port make for a calm leashed loop.
