The Tavira coast is a 30 km string of barrier-island Atlantic beaches accessed only by ferry or mini-train, which keeps them quieter than the western Algarve. The official Portuguese bathing season runs June-September, with municipal restrictions on dogs in those months at all beaches with lifeguards. Off-season (October-April), the Ilha de Tavira and Barril become some of the most generous dog beaches in southern Europe.
An 11 km Atlantic barrier island reached by the year-round Quatro Águas ferry (5-min crossing). Off-season (October-April), dogs walk leashed the entire dune-backed beach east of the ferry landing; the municipal regulamento restricts dogs from the lifeguarded zones between June 15 and September 15.

A barrier-island beach reached by a 600 m wooden footbridge or a 4-minute mini-train from Pedras d`el Rei, anchored visually by the Cemitério das Âncoras (anchor cemetery) marking the former tuna-fishing days. Off-season the western 2 km of the beach is dog-tolerant and almost empty.

The Ilha de Cabanas barrier island reached by a 1-minute ferry from the Cabanas de Tavira village quay (year-round, around EUR 2 return). The 7 km Atlantic beach is broad, dune-backed and almost empty east of the ferry landing; off-season dogs run leashed without restriction.
