Top Dog-Friendly Attractions in Tavira

The seven-arch stone bridge over the Rio Gilão is the signature image of Tavira, traditionally attributed to the Romans but largely rebuilt in the medieval and modern periods. The bridge is pedestrian-only since 2016 and admits leashed dogs day and night, with the best photo angle from the Praça da República esplanada.

The hilltop Castelo de Tavira preserves Moorish-era walls and a small landscaped garden inside the keep, with panoramic views over the seven-arch bridge, the salinas and the Ilha de Tavira beyond. The adjacent 13th-century Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo houses the tomb of the Reconquista knight Dom Paio Peres Correia; the castle interior and gardens are dog-friendly year-round and free.

The Praça da República is the riverside town square, framed by the 18th-century Câmara Municipal arcade and facing the Ponte Romana, with the small Núcleo Islâmico museum (Moorish-era artefacts excavated under the square in 1995) tucked into the corner. The square and arcade are entirely dog-friendly outdoor public space year-round.
