St. Moritz

The turquoise lake at the heart of the resort, ringed by a flat promenade linking St. Moritz Bad to Dorf, perfect for an easy walk with mountain views. Leashed dogs are welcome year-round; in winter the frozen lake hosts horse racing and polo, so keep to the marked shore paths then.

A historic funicular climbing to 2456 metres, opening one of the finest panoramas over the Engadin valley and its chain of lakes. Dogs are allowed in the cabin and on the famous panoramic path (Philosophenweg) from the top; bring water, as the air is dry and the sun fierce.

The Corviglia ski area and the Piz Nair summit (3057 metres) are reached by funicular then cable car from the centre, opening onto flower-filled alpine meadows in summer. Dogs travel in the cabins on a reduced ticket; at altitude the sun and thin air tire quickly, so pace the effort.

About twenty minutes toward the Bernina Pass, the Morteratsch glacier trail follows a near-level valley marked with posts showing the ice's retreat year by year. Leashed dogs are welcome on this easy, partly shaded walk; the glacial stream lets a dog cool its paws.

A UNESCO-listed railway crossing the Bernina Pass down to Tirano in Italy, among the most spectacular in the Alps with its spiral viaducts. Dogs ride at half fare (a muzzle may be asked when crowded); a regional ticket as far as Alp Grum or Ospizio Bernina is enough to enjoy the finest scenery.

A dome-topped museum devoted to the painter Giovanni Segantini, whose luminous alpine canvases capture the soul of the Engadin. Dogs are not allowed inside; leave your companion with a friend and afterwards enjoy the nearby lakeside promenade, which is open to leashed pets.
