Parks & Green Spaces in Salzburg

The Mönchsberg is the forested cliff that forms the western wall of Salzburg's Altstadt, rising 50 metres above the rooftops. A network of woodland paths runs along the top, connecting the Museum der Moderne (contemporary art) with the Richterhöhe viewpoint and the Augustiner brewery below. The lift from the Gstättengasse (elevator, €3 one way) or the steep stairs from Toscanini Hof make it easily accessible. Dogs are welcome on all paths.

The Salzach cuts through the city with broad gravel banks and flat promenade paths on both sides. The left bank (Altstadt side) has a formal, tree-lined promenade from the Staatsbrücke south to the Müllner Steg; the right bank (Neustadt side) runs through parks and sports fields. Both are excellent for dog walks — flat, long, and with river access at many points. Dogs may swim from the gravel banks in the upstream sections.

The Mirabellgarten is Salzburg's most famous formal garden, laid out in baroque style with geometric rose beds, fountains, marble statues, and the iconic view of the Festung Hohensalzburg fortress rising behind the palace. Made internationally famous by The Sound of Music (filmed here), the garden is freely accessible and dogs on leads are welcome. The Dwarf Garden (Zwerglgarten) on the south side has a charming collection of baroque marble statues. Views over the Altstadt from the upper terraces are outstanding.

The Gaisberg (1,287 m) is Salzburg's home mountain — rising directly east of the city, it is reached by a scenic road or by foot trails starting from the Aigen district. The summit gives a panoramic view over Salzburg, the Salzach valley, and the Berchtesgaden Alps beyond. The forested lower slopes have excellent walking trails for dogs at all fitness levels; the upper sections are more exposed but still accessible. A summit restaurant and café are dog-friendly on the terrace. Bus 151 runs from Mirabellplatz to the trailhead at Zistelalm.
