Saint-Malo is a rewarding dog destination if you plan around two things: the strict summer beach ban and the extreme tides. The walled town, ramparts and coastal paths keep dogs busy year-round, and the cool Atlantic climate is gentle on dogs even in July. Below are the key rules, seasonal notes and safety points for a smooth trip.
Dogs must be leashed on public streets, the ramparts and in parks. All Saint-Malo beaches are off-limits to dogs 24/7 from 1 April to 30 September, with a 35 EUR fine; dogs are allowed on beaches on-leash only from 1 October to 31 March. Always pick up after your dog.
Saint-Malo has one of Europe's biggest tidal ranges (up to about 13 metres). The sea returns fast and can cut off the foreshore and the Grand Bรฉ and Petit Bรฉ islets. Check tide times before any low-tide walk and keep your dog close near the water.
For beach access with a dog, visit October to March when all beaches reopen to leashed dogs. For warm, dry sightseeing, May to September is best but beaches are dog-free, so rely on the ramparts and GR34. The cool Atlantic summer rarely overheats dogs.
Take the Compagnie Corsaire sea bus to Dinard (dogs about 3 EUR, on-leash) for an easy dog-walkable change of scene across the Rance. The Grand Bรฉ islet and Chateaubriand's tomb are reachable on foot from Bon-Secours at low tide only, dogs on-leash, so time it to the tide tables.
