Rethymno rewards dog owners who plan around the Cretan summer climate. The old town, harbour and seafront are easy and welcoming on foot, but heat is the defining factor from June to September. A few local rules and seasonal habits will keep your dog safe and comfortable.
From June to September, Crete is hot and dry, with daytime highs often near 30C and stone and sand that radiate heat. Walk dogs before 09:00 or after 19:00, test pavements with your hand, carry water on every outing, and never leave a dog in a parked car. Heatstroke is the single most common emergency for visiting dogs.
Greek Law 4830/2021 governs pets nationwide. Dogs must be leashed in public spaces, owners must carry waste bags and clean up, and dogs must be microchipped and registered. On beaches, dogs are allowed on unorganized stretches and in the sea but must be leashed on the sand; organized sunbed beaches and Blue Flag beaches restrict or ban pets.
Spring (April to early June) and autumn (late September to October) are ideal for dogs: warm, sunny, far less crowded, and gentle on paws. July and August are the busiest and hottest, manageable only with strict early-morning and evening routines. Winter is mild and quiet, perfect for long seafront and Fortezza walks.
Rethymno's old town is compact, largely pedestrian and best explored on foot with a leashed dog. Its narrow Venetian-Ottoman alleys offer welcome shade at midday, but the stone underfoot still gets hot, so favour mornings and evenings. The harbour, town beach and Municipal Garden are all within easy walking distance of each other.
