Ras Al Khaimah is the most dog-welcoming emirate in the UAE thanks to its official Ras Al-K9 program, but it is still a desert destination with strict rules and serious heat. Plan around the cool winter season, respect the leash law and local cultural sensitivities, and sort your import paperwork well in advance. These notes cover the things that catch first-time visitors out.
From roughly May to September, Ras Al Khaimah is brutally hot, often 35-45 C with high humidity, and sand and asphalt in direct sun far exceed the air temperature, burning paw pads in seconds. Even in the cooler months, midday surfaces get dangerously hot. Walk dogs at dawn or after sunset year-round, do the seven-second hand test on the ground, carry water everywhere, and never leave a dog in a parked car. The comfortable travel season for a dog is November to March.
Dogs must be kept on a leash in all public areas across the UAE; rope substitutes are not accepted, and large or restricted breeds must also be muzzled. Several breeds (pit bull types, American Staffordshire, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa and others) are banned from import. Beyond the law, be culturally considerate: many residents are not comfortable around dogs, so keep your dog close, do not let it approach strangers or children, keep well away from mosques and prayer areas, and be especially discreet during Ramadan. Outside the Ras Al-K9 venues, dogs are not allowed in malls, public parks, public beaches or public transport.
The best time to travel with a dog is the winter-sun season, November to March, when days are a pleasant 18-28 C; October and March are warm shoulder months and the summer is best avoided. RAK is quieter and generally cheaper than Dubai while sitting under the same winter sun. The local currency is the UAE dirham (AED); a rough rule is to divide AED by four for euros (for example 400 AED is about 100 EUR). Budget for an import permit, a rental car and pet fees at hotels, which vary widely by property.
