Dhayah Fort
Dhayah, north Ras Al Khaimah
An 18th-century hilltop mud-brick fort, the last fort in the UAE to fall during the British campaign of 1819, reached by a flight of 239 stone steps. The summit gives panoramic views over date-palm plantations, the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf. It is an open-air, free-access heritage site that suits a leashed dog and an early walk; there is no explicit dog policy, so be discreet.
๐ก The 239 steps and bare stone heat up fast; climb at sunrise and carry water for the dog, checking the ground temperature with your hand.
