Ras Al Khaimah is the United Arab Emirates' quiet beach-and-mountain resort emirate and, thanks to its official Ras Al-K9 program, the most dog-welcoming corner of the country, with long natural beaches and the Al Marjan Island corniche meeting Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, behind it, quieter and cheaper than Dubai 45 to 75 minutes south under the same November-to-March winter sun. Top spots for pets include the Ras Al-K9 listed Flamingo and Al Hamra beaches with leashed dogs, the leashed lower trails and Viewing Deck Park of Jebel Jais, the hilltop Dhayah Fort and the abandoned pearling village of Al Jazirah Al Hamra, especially around the Al Hamra Village and Al Marjan Island resort strip with the pet-friendly hotels, cafes and listed beaches, Flamingo Beach near the Ruzo restaurant, and the Hajar Mountains and Jebel Jais inland for wadi walks and mountain drives.

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, has stayed apart from the rush of Dubai. Once the port of the powerful Al Qawasim tribe, long feared for its seafarers, it lived for centuries on pearling and Gulf trade. Today it is a quieter, more nature-facing emirate: red dune desert, mangroves, the coral old town of Al Jazirah Al Hamra, and above all Jebel Jais, the country's highest peak at nearly 1,900 m, where the air cools and you can actually walk. For a visitor with a dog, be clear-eyed: as elsewhere in the UAE, dogs are largely banned from public beaches, malls and enclosed sites, and summer heat often tops 45 C, dangerous in the middle of the day. The mountain and the desert on the leash, early in the morning, remain the real options.
The highest peak in the UAE at nearly 1,900 m, Jebel Jais offers markedly cooler air than the lowlands and trails and viewpoints where you can walk the dog on the leash. It is the emirate's real nature escape, best kept to the cooler hours and with plenty of water.
Perched on a hill above the palm groves, this eighteenth-century mud-brick fort is the last relic of the Al Qawasim resistance and gives a superb view over the coast and mountains. The site is open-air and visited on the leash, but the stepped climb heats up fast in the sun.
A former pearling town built of coral and abandoned in the 1960s, Al Jazirah Al Hamra is one of the few intact traditional villages left on the Gulf. You wander its lanes and coral houses in the open air, dog on the leash, best in the late afternoon.
The Al Qawasim Corniche runs along the Ras Al Khaimah creek with its walkways, lawns and views of dhows and the old town. You can walk here early in the morning on the leash, but the public bathing beaches remain off-limits to dogs.
The mangroves lining the creek and the Al Wadi desert shelter a rich birdlife and are best explored by kayak along the channels. Some trips will take a small dog aboard on the leash, to confirm with the operator, and only in the cooler hours.
Housed in the former fort residence of the ruling family, the national museum traces the archaeology, pearling and history of the emirate. The interior is off-limits to dogs, but the courtyard and outer walls can be walked on the leash.
