Portofino is one of the most photographed villages in Italy, and with a dog it rewards honesty about what it is: a tiny, exclusive, largely car-free harbour on a steep, rocky promontory, with a flat, easy piazzetta and a big natural park behind it, but essentially no dog beach. The dog highlights are real, the harbour walk, the climb to Castello Brown and the lighthouse, and the leashed trails through the Parco di Portofino to San Fruttuoso, but they are walks and views, not swimming. Arrive by bus or ferry from Santa Margherita, keep to the leash-and-muzzle transport rules, plan around the heat, and do not oversell the beaches to yourself.
