Dog-Friendly Attractions in Padua

Padua's two main market squares, separated by the medieval Palazzo della Ragione (1218) — its ground-floor arcade is one of Italy's longest, sheltering food stalls and salumerie. The piazzas host a daily morning fruit-and-vegetable market and become an aperitivo hotspot every evening. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout both squares and the porticoed arcades around them.

The vast piazza outside the Basilica of Saint Anthony — one of the most visited religious sites in Italy and the saint's burial place. Donatello's bronze equestrian statue of the condottiero Gattamelata (1453) anchors the square. Dogs are not allowed inside the basilica or its cloisters, but the surrounding piazza, the Prato della Valle (5 minutes' walk) and the canal-side paths give plenty of context with a leashed dog.

Padua is ringed by a moat-canal system fed by the Bacchiglione river, with broad pedestrian paths along Riviera Tito Livio, Riviera Albertino Mussato and Riviera dei Mugnai. The complete perimeter loop is around 4 km on flat, mostly tree-shaded paths — an ideal cool morning walk. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout; bins and water taps are sparse so bring your own.
