Olomouc, the historic capital of Moravia, was one of the most powerful cities of the Czech lands: an episcopal seat from 1063, a university founded in 1573, and an imperial fortress that sheltered the Habsburg court fleeing the 1848 revolution. Its Holy Trinity Column, 35 meters of baroque sculpture completed in 1754, has been UNESCO-listed since 2000, and its six baroque fountains punctuate squares where the communist-era astronomical clock of 1955 answers the Gothic town hall. A university city of around 100,000, Olomouc remains Central Europe's great anti-overtourism secret: Prague's monuments without the crowds. With a dog the setup is ideal: a belt of parks on the former ramparts (leash required), the Morava floodplain for free running, the forested Svatý Kopeček hill, and an absolute rarity, a zoo that admits muzzled, leashed dogs for 100 CZK.
The Holy Trinity Column, 35 UNESCO-listed baroque meters in the middle of the main square. Terraces, the astronomical clock and a leashed dog coexist without trouble.
One of Europe's rare zoos admitting visiting dogs: 100 CZK dog ticket, muzzle and leash mandatory, pavilions excluded. On Svatý Kopeček hill, with a 32-meter lookout tower.
The ravine park squeezed between the medieval walls and the Mlýnský stream, the most atmospheric of the green belt. Leash required, and the municipal police do enforce it.
The wooded pilgrimage hill crowned by the baroque basilica, 20 minutes away on bus 11. Forest trails, a panoramic esplanade over the Haná plain and the dog-friendly u Macků restaurant.
The main square with the Gothic town hall, the communist-era astronomical clock and two of the six baroque fountains. The fountain circuit across the squares is the classic leashed town walk.
A big gravel-pit lake 10 km north, with an easy walking loop and tolerated dog swimming points. A bird sanctuary: leash and distance rules in nesting season.
