Olbia is an easy, walkable base for a pet-friendly Sardinian holiday, but the summer heat and seasonal beach rules shape everything. Plan walks and meals around the cooler hours, head to the designated dog beaches, and you will find the city and the Costa Smeralda very rewarding with a dog.
Dogs must be leashed in public areas, and owners must carry a muzzle to put on when required (for example on ARST buses and where staff ask). Always clean up after your dog. Most popular Sardinian beaches ban dogs in summer, roughly June to September, except in designated dog areas, with fines for breaches.
Sardinian summers are intense, with July and August highs around 32C. Walk your dog early morning or after sunset, avoid midday paving and sand which can burn paws, and always carry water. Never leave a dog in a parked car; heatstroke is the most common pet emergency on the island.
Late spring (May, early June) and early autumn (September, October) are ideal with a dog: warm enough to swim at the dog beaches, but without the peak heat or the strictest beach bans. July and August are hot and busy, so plan around the cooler hours and the designated dog beaches.
Pair a morning at Le Saline dog beach with an evening stroll along Corso Umberto and the basilica of San Simplicio. It captures the best of dog-friendly Olbia: a free off-leash swim near the city, then a relaxed aperitivo on a terrace once the heat has dropped.
