Ajaccio is Corsica's sunlit capital and Napoléon's birthplace, a Genoese citadel on a sheltered Mediterranean gulf where year-round mild winters, ridge-top maquis trails, the Sanguinaires boat tours and wild Capo di Feno dog beach make it the island's most pet-friendly base. Top spots for pets include the Sentier des Crêtes ridge walk, the Pointe de la Parata and Sanguinaires islands, and the year-round dog beach of Capo di Feno, especially around the Quartier des Étrangers around the Cours Grandval, the Vieille Ville around the Maison Bonaparte, and the marina-front Quai Napoléon.

Ajaccio, capital of Southern Corsica and birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte (1769), is a sun-drenched Mediterranean city of 72,000 at the head of a sheltered gulf facing the Sanguinaires islands. Founded in 1492 by the Republic of Genoa on a defensive promontory, the city preserves its 16th-century Genoese Citadelle Miollis, the granite-paved alleys of the Vieille Ville around the Maison Bonaparte, and the Palais Fesch — one of France's finest Italian painting collections outside Paris, the legacy of Cardinal Fesch, Napoléon's uncle. For dog owners, Ajaccio is the most pet-friendly base on Corsica: Mediterranean climate with very mild winters (11–12°C in January), the 7 km Sentier des Crêtes ridge walk on the heights with 360° sea panoramas, Pointe de la Parata and Sanguinaires islands to the west accessible by boat (leashed dogs on open decks), wild year-round dog beach at Capo di Feno, and a Corsican culture deeply welcoming to pets in the Vieille Ville trattorie and seafront beach bars. Ferry logistics (Marseille/Nice/Toulon/Livorno/Savona/Piombino) and flights (Air Corsica/Air France) are well-established but require pet booking 6–8 weeks ahead for July–August dates.
7 km ridge trail above Ajaccio, 360° panoramas over the Gulf and the Sanguinaires. Off-leash permitted on the ridge, partial pine and holm oak shade, two natural springs.
Rocky headland at the western tip, 16th-century Genoese tower, looped Sanguinaires trail. Leashed dogs, magical at sunset when the Sanguinaires islands turn red.
Napoléon's birthplace, 17th-century townhouse in the heart of the Vieille Ville. Museum interior not dog-accessible, but the facade and Place Letizia in front are dog-friendly year-round.
Wild crescent of white sand 15 min west by car, facing the open sea. Dogs permitted year-round without restriction, 800 m length, no summer lifeguarding.
16th-century Genoese citadel guarding the port, demilitarised in 2019. Free-access ramparts walk, leashed dogs year-round, the most scenic panoramic spot in the centre.
Bonaparte family olive grove 4 km north, opened as a free public park. Centuries-old olive trees, picnic tables, the only truly shaded urban green space in summer.
