New York: history & character

New York, founded in 1624 as the Dutch trading post of New Amsterdam and renamed by the English in 1664, has become in four centuries the world's most influential financial, cultural and migratory metropolis. Its 8.3 million inhabitants share 783 km² across five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island), a density that paradoxically makes it one of the most pet-aware US cities. For dog owners, NYC offers a unique mix: 70+ dog runs maintained by the Parks Department, the most generous urban off-leash hours in America (Central and Prospect Parks, 5–9 am and 9 pm–1 am), a dense 24/7 emergency-vet network, and a luxury-hotel culture that actively welcomes pets. The constraints: the MTA carrier rule on the subway, summer asphalt reaching 50 °C in the afternoon, and a Health Code that excludes dogs from restaurant interiors (but allows them on patios since 2015).
