Naxos is a relaxed, dog-tolerant Cycladic island with vast beaches, walkable old-town lanes, and a strong taverna culture that suits travelling with a calm dog. The two things to plan around are the summer heat and the ferry logistics. Here is what to know before you go.
Under Greek Law 4830/2021, dogs must be leashed in all public areas and the owner must carry the pet's up-to-date health booklet and proof of microchipping. Dog waste must be picked up. On free, unorganised beaches dogs may enter the sea, but organised beaches admit dogs only with the operator's consent, and Blue Flag beaches generally ban them.
July and August are hot and dry, with strong sun and the meltemi wind. Walk dogs at dawn and after sunset, never on bare sand or stone at midday, and always carry water. Sand, marble, and paving can burn paws between roughly 11:00 and 18:00. Choose shaded terraces and air-conditioned accommodation, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
Plan the ferry first. Blue Star ferries offer pet cabins, kennels, and carrier travel, while high-speed SeaJets catamarans only take small dogs in a carrier with you. Book pet space well ahead in summer. Once on the island, a rental car is the most dog-friendly way to get around the heat and the beaches, since buses only take small dogs in crates.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal for a dog: warm sea, gentler sun, and quieter beaches. High summer (July to August) is doable but demands strict heat management. Winter is mild and very quiet, though many beach tavernas and some services close out of season.
