Modena, a city of about 185,000 in Emilia-Romagna, is world-famous as the capital of traditional balsamic vinegar (PDO since 2000) and as the birthplace of Ferrari, Maserati, Pagani and Pavarotti. The Romanesque Cathedral (1099–1184), the Ghirlandina tower (1169–1319) and the Piazza Grande form a UNESCO World Heritage trio listed in 1997. The city was an independent duchy ruled by the Este family from 1452 to 1859 and retains a compact, flat historic centre — one of Italy's most walkable with a dog. Just 30 minutes from Bologna and 1h45 from Milan by train, Modena combines an exceptional culinary scene (Osteria Francescana, 3 Michelin stars), unique UNESCO heritage, and one of Emilia-Romagna's best dog infrastructures, with four fenced sgambamento dog parks.
UNESCO-listed since 1997. The central square is fully open to leashed dogs; the Romanesque cathedral interior (1099–1184) is not (except assistance dogs).
87-metre bell tower built between 1169 and 1319, symbol of Modena. 200 steps for the best city view. Dogs not allowed inside; surrounding piazza accessible.
The city's main park (13 ha), designed for the Este dukes in the 17th century behind the Palazzo Ducale. Plane trees, ponds, fenced off-leash dog area in the north-west corner.
Modern park of 23 ha north of the station (2009). Open lawns, jogging loop, large fenced sgambamento area over 2 hectares — Modena's best off-leash run.
Historic covered market from 1931 — Art Deco, wrought iron, bronze central fountain. Leashed dogs welcome in the outer aisles; for the indoor food stalls, it varies by vendor.
Ferrari museum built around the house where Enzo Ferrari was born (1898). Yellow-roofed pavilion by Jan Kaplický (2012). Dogs not allowed inside; outdoor garden accessible.
