Leiden Centraal is one of the busiest NS stations in the Netherlands, a five-minute walk from the Beestenmarkt and the historic centre, with direct Intercity trains to Amsterdam Centraal in 35 minutes, Den Haag in 12 minutes, Rotterdam in 25 minutes and Schiphol Airport in 17 minutes. NS rules apply nationwide: dogs in a carrier travel free, larger dogs need an NS Dagkaart Hond (€3.30) and a leash. Local Arriva regional trains, Connexxion buses 30/31/57 to the Bollenstreek tulip fields and the Katwijk and Noordwijk beaches, plus the new R-Net rapid-transit buses complete the picture.

NS Trains (Leiden Centraal)

Larger dogs need a Dagkaart Hond (Day Pass for Dogs, €3.30, unlimited NS travel that day) and must be on a leash with a muzzle available in case of complaint. Intercity to Amsterdam Centraal 35 min, to Den Haag Centraal 12 min, to Rotterdam Centraal 25 min, to Schiphol 17 min.

💡 Buy the Dagkaart Hond at any yellow NS machine on the Leiden Centraal concourse before boarding; one ticket covers all NS travel that day, including the side trips to Den Haag, Rotterdam and Haarlem.

Connexxion Bus 30/31/57 (Leiden-Katwijk-Noordwijk-Bollenstreek)

🐾 Connexxion regional buses 30 and 31 run from Leiden Centraal to Katwijk aan Zee and Noordwijk aan Zee beaches in 25-30 minutes; bus 57 runs through the Bollenstreek tulip fields toward Lisse and Hillegom. Dogs in a carrier free; larger dogs allowed leashed at the driver's discretion, no extra ticket required. Useful end-to-end for a beach day from a Leiden centre hotel or a spring tulip-fields walk.

💡 Buy a single OV-chipkaart bus ticket at the front kiosk or tap a contactless card on board; the bus 30 drops you 200 m from the Katwijk dog beach Northern zone.

Schiphol Airport Direct Train

🐾 NS Intercity from Leiden Centraal to Schiphol Airport runs every 10-15 minutes, 17 min journey direct. Same dog rules as all NS trains: carrier free, larger dog needs Dagkaart Hond (€3.30) and leash. Schiphol has multiple indoor pet-relief areas in every terminal.

💡 If you fly with KLM out of Schiphol, the pet-relief room in Terminal 3 land-side is the largest and quietest; ask staff for the door code at check-in.
