Larnaca is an easy, walkable city for a dog out of the midday sun, but the Cyprus summer heat is the single biggest thing to plan around. Get the timing, water and beach rules right and the rest falls into place.
Cyprus summers are intense, often above 35C, and hot sand and pavement can burn paws. Walk at dawn or after sunset, test surfaces with the back of your hand for seven seconds, carry water at all times, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
Dogs are banned from organised and blue-flag beaches in Cyprus and may only use beaches designated by the Central Beaches Committee. Near Larnaca that means the official Meneou dog beach south of the airport; on permitted beaches the dog must be vaccinated, leashed and accompanied by its health booklet.
Dogs must be leashed in public spaces, with the Larnaca Dog Park the only legal off-leash spot in the city. Always carry your dog's vaccination and health booklet, which is legally required on permitted beaches, and keep waste bags on you as fines apply for not cleaning up.
Cyprus is in the EU, so EU-registered pets need a valid EU pet passport, a 15-digit microchip and a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel. Pets from outside the EU need an animal health certificate and possibly a rabies titer test depending on origin, so check the current Cyprus Veterinary Services rules.
