Larnaca stretches along the south-east coast of Cyprus, around the bay where merchants, crusaders and pilgrims came ashore over the centuries. The town claims a biblical heritage: Saint Lazarus, raised from the dead in the Gospel, is said to have ended his days here as bishop, and the fine Byzantine church that bears his name still watches over the old quarter. Along the water, the Finikoudes promenade unrolls its double row of palms facing the beach and the terraces. To the south, the great Salt Lake draws clouds of flamingos each winter and shelters the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, one of Islam's holy sites. Between the Kamares aqueduct, the medieval fort and a mild climate nearly all year, Larnaca makes a pleasant base for travelling with a dog, provided you work around the summer heat and the seasonal beach rules.
Larnaca's signature promenade lines the central beach with its double row of palms, between terraces, cafes and the marina. Leashed dogs are welcome for the evening stroll, once the heat drops. In the middle of a summer day, favour the shade and carry water.
The church of Saint Lazarus, a 9th-century Byzantine gem, holds by tradition the tomb of the risen saint. Dogs are not admitted inside the church or its crypt, but the small paved square around it can be visited on lead. An essential stop in old Larnaca.
The great Salt Lake south of the city fills with flamingos from November to March, around the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque set in its palm grove. A path circles the lake: dogs are allowed on lead, but do not let them disturb the birds. The interior of the mosque cannot be visited with a dog.
The Kamares aqueduct, its stone arches built in the 18th century under Ottoman rule, supplied the city with water into the 20th century. You can walk freely on lead along the arcades, especially beautiful lit up at dusk. An open, uncrowded space, ideal for a break away from the busy seafront.
The medieval fort, reworked in Ottoman times, guards the southern end of the promenade and houses a small museum. The interior and its halls are not open to dogs, but the seafront alongside it, on the edge of the Turkish quarter and Saint Lazarus church, makes a pleasant leashed walk.
Cyprus has set up several official dog beaches, and the nearest to Larnaca is towards Meneou, south of the city, near Cape Kiti. Dogs can run and swim there in a signposted zone. Check the signage on site, as the boundaries and seasonal rules may change.
