Kefalonia rewards dog owners who plan around the Ionian summer heat and the island's relaxed but informal rules. Most of the friction comes from beach restrictions and the ferry crossing, not from local attitudes, which are warm in the villages.
Ionian summers are intense, with July and August highs around 30-31C and rocky, paved surfaces that radiate heat. Walk dogs early morning or after sunset, test the ground with your hand, carry plenty of water, and never leave a dog in a parked car. Shade is scarce on the wild beaches, so bring your own.
Greek law bans dogs from Blue Flag and organised sunbed beaches, which covers most of Kefalonia's famous spots in summer. Dogs are tolerated on quiet unorganised coves if leashed, and may only swim where no other bathers are present. There is no officially designated dog beach on the island, so plan around quiet coves and shoulder season.
Plan the ferry pet rules carefully: small pets in a carrier, larger dogs in the ship's kennels, and muzzle plus leash on deck. The island bus network is sparse and pet acceptance is at the driver's discretion, so a rental car is the most practical way to reach the dog-friendly coves and northern villages. Confirm the pet and cleaning clause with your rental agency.
There is no 24-hour vet on Kefalonia. The general-practice clinics in Argostoli and Lixouri keep limited hours, so save a vet's mobile number, carry your EU pet passport, and phone ahead for any out-of-hours need. For a serious specialist case, the nearest large facilities are on the mainland at Patras, reached by ferry and road.
