Getting Around Gothenburg with Pets

The Gothenburg tram and bus network operated by Västtrafik. Pets travel free and without any size restriction on trams and buses — no carrier required, no muzzle required for dogs. Dogs are expected to sit on the floor beside their owner, not on seats, but the rule is applied with typical Swedish pragmatism. The tram network covers the Avenyn, Haga, Slottsskogen, the Central Station, and all major tourist areas. Highly dog-friendly — one of the most permissive urban transit systems in Europe.

Sweden's national rail operator connects Gothenburg to Stockholm (3h on the fastest X2000 services), Malmö (2h45), Copenhagen (3h15), and Oslo (4h). Swedish state railways SJ have some of the most pet-friendly policies in Europe: dogs travel in the dedicated 'dog carriage' (on selected services), or in standard carriages with a lead and muzzle. Small dogs in carriers pay a reduced fare; larger dogs pay the standard child fare. The Gothenburg Central Station has a dedicated pet area outside.

The ferry operator connecting the southern Gothenburg archipelago (Styrsö, Brännö, Vrångö, and other islands) from the Saltholmen terminal. Dogs are permitted on deck on all ferries and travel free of charge. The Saltholmen terminal is reached by tram (Line 11). The islands are largely car-free, have extensive coastal walking trails, and are among the most dog-friendly natural environments in Western Sweden. A return trip to Vrångö (the outermost island, 50 min) makes for an excellent half-day excursion.
