Dog-Friendly Beaches in Gothenburg

The beach area around the Saltholmen ferry terminal on Gothenburg's western coast. The rocky shoreline and small sandy coves around the terminal are largely open to dogs, with the exception of the main swimming area at the height of summer. The location at the end of Line 11 tram makes it highly accessible from the centre. The rocky coast is characteristic west Swedish coastline — weathered granite, juniper, and sea views — and makes for excellent coastal walking with a dog even when swimming is not possible.

The outermost island of the southern Gothenburg archipelago, reached by 50-minute ferry from Saltholmen. Vrångö is largely car-free and has a rugged, open coastline with extensive swimming rocks, small beaches, and coastal heathland where dogs can walk freely. The island is popular with Gothenburgers at weekends in summer but remains spacious enough to be uncrowded. Dogs are the norm on the ferries and on the island's paths. Bring lunch and fresh water — the island has a café and kiosk but limited facilities.

A popular sandy beach in the Askim area south of Gothenburg, accessed by bus from the city centre. Askimsbadet has a longer sandy shore than most Gothenburg beaches and is more sheltered than the western archipelago. Dogs are permitted on the beach outside the main bathing area. The beach has a café and public facilities. On warm summer evenings when the crowds have thinned, it is one of the pleasantest dog beaches near the city.
