Pet Travel Tips for Fundão

Fundão's biggest annual event in June celebrates its cherry harvest with markets, concerts and tastings. It is lively and crowded. Dogs are welcome but leash management matters in the busy central streets. Book accommodation 2 months ahead.

Dogs are allowed on marked trails throughout Serra da Estrela on a leash. They are prohibited in certain strictly protected zones near the summit plateau (Planalto da Torre). Check the natural park website or the park office in Seia or Gouveia before heading up.

Portugal is in the EU, so an EU pet passport with valid microchip and up-to-date rabies vaccination is all you need if travelling from another EU country. If arriving from the UK, a new AHC (Animal Health Certificate) is required for each trip. Tapeworm treatment is no longer required for dogs entering Portugal.
