Fréjus was founded around 49 BC by Julius Caesar as Forum Julii, the strategic port of the western Mediterranean Roman fleet and the oldest Roman city in Gaul. The Roman legacy is exceptional: the 1st-century amphitheatre (one of the most complete in southern France), a theatre, a 40 km aqueduct, the harbour and the Augustan lantern. The medieval town centres on the Cathédrale Saint-Léonce and its 5th-century baptistery, one of the oldest Christian structures in France. Twinned with neighbouring Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus combines a long seafront (Frejus-Plage, Saint-Aygulf), a wine-growing hinterland and direct access to the Massif de l'Estérel. For travelling pets, France requires the EU pet passport, ISO microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. The defining feature for visitors with a dog: Fréjus is the most dog-friendly municipality on the French Riviera by a clear margin, with three official dog beaches open year-round, a 100-hectare Base Nature with an enclosed Woof Park, and leashed dogs explicitly admitted inside the Roman amphitheatre.
The 1st-century Roman amphitheatre, restored and still used for concerts and bullfights, is one of the most complete in southern France. Unusually for a French monument, leashed dogs are admitted inside for standard visits, outside special events.
A 100-hectare park on the former naval air station, with flat paths, a free-access beach and a brand-new fully enclosed Woof Park (agility obstacles, water point, shaded benches). Categories 1 and 2 dogs are not admitted to the Woof Park.
The largest of Fréjus' three official dog beaches, at Saint-Aygulf, reserved by municipal order year-round. Fine sand, gentle slope, leash required and waste bins at the entrance.
The medieval town around Place Formigé and Cathédrale Saint-Léonce, whose 5th-century baptistery is one of France's oldest Christian structures. The cathedral interior and cloister do not admit dogs, but the entire walking circuit is open to leashed dogs.
The red-porphyry massif east of Fréjus, crossed by marked trails including the 4 km loop to the Pic du Cap Roux (453 m) with a 360-degree panorama of the bay. Leashed dogs welcome outside summer red-alert fire closures.
The modern marina south of the town, with a long quayside lined with dog-friendly brasseries on the terrace. A flat 1 km promenade around the basin and direct access to Pacha Plage at the Base Nature 800 m away.
